On
Thursday, 15 November 2007, from 9:00am -
4:00pm,
the Scripps Institution
of Oceanography's (SIO's) Institute
of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP), the Birch Aquarium at Scripps (BAS), San Diego State University (SDSU), the
Southern California Earthquake Center
(SCEC), Pasadena
CA Field Office of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA/JPL) will hold its
fifth
annual Earthquake Education Workshop at Scripps
Institution of Oceanography's Visualization Center.
You can find the agenda to the 2007 workshop here.
2007 workshop photos can be found here.
This
workshop will explore the science of earthquakes and apply
these concepts to a wide range of activities (both hands-on
and technology driven). Topics
will be geared toward California
Earth Science Content Standards for 6th Grade, yet all educators are welcome
to attend. The Incorporated
Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), will
generously provide curriculum materials, posters, books
and many of the supplies for the workshop. Discussion leaders
include Debi Kilb (IGPP), Bridget Konter (NASA/JPL), Cheryl Peach (BAS) and Robert Mellors (SDSU).
Workshop
participants and discussion leaders will examine how the activities
can be best implemented with middle school age students. Collectively
the group will consider content standards, what is known about
learning and the day-to-day challenges of teaching science. The
group will share model practices and have ample opportunity to
network. This day-long
workshop will present educators with Earth science teaching
materials designed for educational environments.
