The 2005 SIO Visualization Center Competition Results

The 2005 Student Visualization Competition took place in the SIO Visualization Center on Friday 14th October. There were a total of 10 entries from the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics to the Climate Research Division to the Geosciences Research Division. Once again the judges and audience were impressed with both the high standard of the presentations and the visualizations themselves.

This years competition illustrated a maturing of visualization techniques and presentations, with the entrants learning from the three previous years' competitions (although there were a number of first–year graduate student entries!).

Students presented data and visualizations relevant to their research projects, including orbital libratiuons and lunar seismicity, infra-sound, global warming and earthquakes, localization of calling of blue whales, stress-drop in the Parkfield region, potential tsunami damage in the San Diego region, earthquake rupture scenarios, 3D prototype of a seismometer, investigation of the Jaun de Fuca, and a look at mid-oceanic islands.

The judges had a difficult task in picking winners, but Renee Bulow emerged triumphant, closely followed by Bettina Allmann, Jose Otero, Fan Yang and Jasper Konter. Each winner took home either a iPod Nano, a iPod Mini or Bose QuietComfort 2 noise canceling headphones.

Thanks to Debi Kilb, Bridget Smith, Carolyn Keen, Kitty Haak, Atul Nayak, Thomas Im, Dane Samilo, Evan Morikawa, Jeremie Smith and Graham Kent for helping make sure the day was successful.
