The 2003 SIO Visualization Center Competition Results
The 2003 student visualization competition was once again a great success! A total of 9 students entered from the SIO campus, with impressive and novel visualizations of their research data. Dr. Graham Kent was the M.C. again this year; however four new judges were selected for the tough job of assessing the entries. Many thanks to Steve Cutchin (SDSC), Neal Driscoll (GRD, SIO), Jennifer Matthews (IGPP, SIO), and Dave Sandwell (IGPP, SIO) for their excellent judging.
As tradition dictated, Kurt Schwehr, who won last year's competition, was asked to assist all the contestants as they prepared for this year's competition. Many thanks to Kurt for all his visualization classes throughout the summer: his patience and knowledge of visualization techniques were greatly appreciated by staff and students alike.
The entries this year ranged from a MatLab movie of the simulated velocity structure during an earthquake rupture, seismic slices of ocean basins in the Gulf of Mexico and North Carolina, Martian data incongruities and geology, Pacific seamount composition to the sound generated by earthquakes! The center was filled to capacity with researchers, staff and other graduate students who were impressed with the level of complexity of the visualizations, and also the professional presentation skills by all the contestants.
Many thanks to the judges and congratulations to the student participants who took home iPods, Flash storage cards, and portable Firewire drives, and many of the unique gifts generously donated by local San Diego museums and restaurants.
