The layout for the demonstration with the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve (SMER). The middle panel in the top row shows Spring Strahm engaging in a Skype video session with the audience at AAAS. As she takes a sample from the river, the graphs on the second panel update readings to show pH, oxygen levels and other parameters, in near real-time. The fourth panel shows a real-time feed from an elevated camera pointed to the gorge. The bottom two rows show a panoramic view of the gorge and the river passing through, these images updated every minute.

Frank Vernon demonstrates the Garner Valley shake table to a visitor. The shake table was operated remotely from the AAAS exhibition, and the shaking could be viewed on the real time camera pointed to the table and also in the waveform displays.
