Today, a student from UC Santa Barbara who showed an interest in the field of ocean-observing and earth sciences was given a tour of the Scripps campus, wherein he stopped by the iCluster to see its capabilities as well as the visualizations developed here.

At the California Ocean Protection Council meeting in San Francisco, Dr. Tony Haymet, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, showed a short film about potential sea level rise scenarios along the San Diego coast and discussed the need for research on sea level rise impacts to beaches. The movie was produced by the staff at the SIO Visualization Center with data from CDIP and the Birch Aquarium.

Dr. Rob Newman talked about earthquake research and visualization techniques at SIO to students from La Jolla Elementary School. The students learned why Southern California is so seismically active, and how researchers at SIO are using seismic data to learn about the crustal structure of the North American plate. The tour included an earthquake generation demonstration and a long Q and A session.
