Geoscientists from Scripps and visualization scientists from EVL were at the Fall 2003 AGU meeting this week in San Francisco where they showcased the Geowall 2 - a cluster driven tiled display visualization system. The groups showed demonstrations of 3-D visual objects developed at several institutions across the country, including SIO, UCSD, University of Michigan, University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Minnesota.

Graduate student German Prieto used the capabilities of the SIO VizCenter to create a movie for his talk on 'Earthquake source scaling and self-similarity estimation by stacking P and S spectra' for the fall 2003 AGU meeting, which will be held in San Francisco this December.

Jenna Munson, TA for the UCSD undergraduate class, Introduction to Earth
and Environmental Science, brought her students down to the Viz center to
look at spreading centers, subduction zones, earthquake data, the
geomorphology of Mars, and the structure of Lake Tahoe. The class had
studied plate boundaries, earthquakes, geomorphology, and the geology of
California in the past few weeks, so a trip to the Viz Center at the end of
the quarter was a great way to apply what they had learned and look at some
of these features in 3-D stereo.

Demonstrations exploring the capabilities of the GEOWALL1, GEOWALL2, and the HIVE at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) were conducted for Shell Oil company representatives from the Netherlands. These presentations were part of a joint effort between SIO staff and researchers and members of the Cal-(IT)2 research and development team. Highlighted were the spectrum of problems that scientists are currently addressing and the methods used to simultaneously use the full capabilities of hardware, software and applications. The visitors found the ability to setup and use a GEOWALL1 in remote settings such as on an oilrig or platform, and the ability to explore geophysical data in a manner similar to viewing data in larger visualization centers, to be powerful ideas.
