Earthquakes and Music: Exploring Seismic-Waves and Sound-Waves
Workshop Description
This workshop summarizes a series of four in-classroom lessons that expand curriculum standards of Earth science beyond the basics with a twist that will glue any 6th grader to their seat: sound (“you call that music?!”). Learn how to use oscilloscope free-ware that captures sounds and displays waveforms. Listen and watch the oscilloscope display as various instruments, including voice, are played, and finally, experiment with rhythm using the instruments at hand to duplicate wave patterns produced by the Earth (e.g., P- S- and Surface-waves). Musicians from the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus will be on site to make sure we generate a variety of dynamic ranges, noises and frequencies.
Please join us for an exciting and informative session of hands-on learning presented by Dr. Debi Kilb, The Scripps Institution of Oceanography and members of the La Jolla Symphony.
