Earthquake Swarm near Lone Pine, California

Swarm Began 01 October 2009 (>300 Earthquakes)

  • AUTHOR: Debi Kilb
  • DATE: 2009-10-05

A swarm of earthquakes (~18 km southeast of Lone Pine California, centered at approximately -117.86, 36.39, ~6 km depth) began with a magnitude 5.1 earthquake on 01 October 2009 at 10:01:24 UTC. Within the first week there were over 300 earthquakes in this swarm, of which 9 were magnitude 4 or larger. This interactive 3-D visualization includes the location of the earthquakes in this swarm (diamonds, colored and sized by magnitude), historical seismicity (~64,000 yellow points), EarthScope’s USArray seismic station locations both past and present (orange cylinders), an outline of the USA (yellow lines), and topography/bathymetry of the region. The temporal/spatial evolution of this earthquake swarm data can be explored using the 4D feature of the IVS software (http://www.ivs3d.com/).
