  • AUTHOR: Debi Kilb & Danny Brothers

On Saturday 21 March 2009 an earthquake swarm began near Bombay Beach, which is on the eastern side of the Salton Sea in southern California. Within the first week of the swarm over 350 earthquakes were recorded in this region, the largest of which was a magnitude 4.8 earthquake that occurred on Tuesday March 24th at 4:55 AM PST. This relatively large 4.8 earthquake was felt by over 400 people within the San Diego and extended regions. This scene file highlights the 12 largest earthquakes (red diamonds) in this swarm that range in magnitude from 3.0 to 4.8. The 358 earthquakes that are below magnitude 3.0 (orange orbs) are also shown, as is the full set of all 370 earthquakes (purple crosshairs). For reference we also include the location of ~419,522 earthquakes (yellow cubes) that occurred in southern California from 1981-2005 (data from LSH_1.12 catalog of Lin, Shearer and Hauksson, 2007, yellow box encompasses these data). Also included in this visualization are known California fault traces (brown lines), major roads (grey lines), and an outline of the state of California (white lines). Bathymetry and topography is shown for a portion of the region, and we label some of the major cities (green text).
