On Monday 17 November 2008, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake occurred 10 miles north of Palomar Observatory in southern California. This earthquake was located at (33.500 -116.861) and had a depth of 12.1 km. Five hours later a slightly sallower (11.5 km) magnitude 3.8 aftershock occurred at (33.496 -116.864). Approximately ~2000 people in southern California reported feeling the larger quake. This scene file highlights these two relatively large earthquakes (red diamonds). Also include in the scene are the ~42,000 earthquakes (yellow dots) that occurred in southern California within the last 23 years. For reference larger earthquakes of magnitude 4 or larger (288 earthquakes; salmon colored spheres), which primarily occur along the rupture zone of the 1992 magnitude 7.3 Landers earthquake in the ~northeast of our study area (region enclosed in the dark purple box). EarthScope's USArray seismic stations are shown as olive colored cylinders. Also included in this visualization are known California fault traces (brown lines), major roads (light purple lines), and outline of the state of California (white lines). Bathymetry and topography is shown for a portion of the region, and we label some of the major cities (orange text).
