Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO): Northwestern USA

  • AUTHOR: Debi Kilb & Alexander Quan
  • DATE: 2007-06-01

The goal of the Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO, which is part of the EarthScope project) is to study the three-dimensional strain field resulting from the active plate boundary deformation across the Western United States. This scene file includes the topography of North America, which shows a combination of mountain ridges and peaks that have developed to accommodate the plate boundary deformation. Also shown are instrumentation locations (red cylinders), an outline of the United States, and GPS vectors (white arrows) indicating the direction and magnitude of surface movement. For a high resolution version of this scene file, please contact us at "vizinfo@ucsd.edu".
